The Street of Broken Broadband Dreams, Chapter 4b

Look upon the face of frustration and know me.

based on my former experience, I’m going to sit and just watch quietly until it actually happens.

So. The, um, wireless broadband guys? They didn’t show up today. They were allegedly on the “job from Hell” up the hill from our house (indeed, they called it a “debacle”), and it was going “horribly wrong,” and so they postponed their visit to us until tomorrow morning.

This leads me to editorialize the following, since there’s nobody else who will listen.

If you ever, ever go into a service business (esp. a high-tech one), please understand that you will deal with customers from time to time (such as me) who are so beaten down with frustration that when you let them down, it seriously affects the business relationship for all time. Yes, this is corollary to “you never get a second chance at a first impression,” but it goes somewhat deeper.

Perception is a tricky thing: when it’s on your side, you can do no wrong, you are the King of the World, and everybody loves you; when it’s against you, you are somehow tainted, afflicted, or otherwise damaged goods, and it takes much more than double the effort to regain your former glory.

This is my opinion of wireless broadband in Eastern Sonoma County. The current players are all retards, who can’t condescend to serve a customer with pocketfuls of money ready and willing to throw at the problem of Internet connectivity. $500/month for a proper T1 all the way out here in the boonies is starting to sound appealing.

Of course, there is the perception (in my mind at least) of about a 1.11% (repeating, of course) chance that I will have broadband tomorrow. Then this diatribe will be a happy memory that I can laugh about as I BitTorrent about a million movies to make up for this frustration.

Off I go to the gimp-land of dialup, for perhaps the last night.
